Zambia Copper Mine Haul Road Dust Control: ER Road Dust-Suppression Technology

Located in Zambia — known as the “Copper Country” — this mine haul road carries ore out of the pit around the clock. Heavy transport vehicles run day and night, continuously lifting fine dust and sand particles from the road surface and creating a dust problem that has long proved difficult to solve. The dust not only reduces visibility along the haul route and creates driving-safety risks, but also directly affects the working environment and health of on-site personnel.

Traditional water spraying can only suppress the dust briefly and must be repeated constantly, consuming large amounts of water and manpower without addressing the root cause. In May 2026,MiningRoad carried out a dust-control project on the external haul road of a copper mine in Zambia, applying ER road dust-suppression technology — offering a new path to solving the mine-road dust problem.

ER: A Dust-Suppression Technology Developed Specifically for Traffic Roads

ER uses food-grade polysaccharides as its raw material. The product is diluted with water and applied by water truck, forming an “anchoring–capturing” dual-action system for surface particles:

  • Anchoring the surface: the agent penetrates the surface layer, reconstructing loose soil and sand particles into a stable solidified structure, so that fine particles no longer have the conditions to become airborne.

  • Capturing dust: it actively adjusts the electrostatic micro-environment between the surface and dust particles, reshaping the force-field balance on particle surfaces to continuously capture and lock in surrounding airborne dust.

  • Immediate effect: it can be applied at temperatures above 0°C, and the dust-suppression effect appears immediately after application.

  • Environmentally clean: a food-grade formula containing no toxic or harmful substances, certified through environmental testing — non-toxic and naturally degradable.

Results: Dust Suppression Up 80%, Water-Spraying Frequency Essentially Eliminated

After the project was completed, dust suppression on the haul road increased by 80%, and water-spraying frequency dropped sharply — essentially achieving no additional watering. Visibility and the working environment along the haul route improved significantly, and the road surface formed a stable solidified layer that continues to resist dust regeneration under continuous vehicle traffic.

How ER Differs from Other Dust-Control Products

ER is an independent product developed specifically for dust suppression on traffic roads, and is intended only for dust control on dynamic traffic surfaces. Its molecular-chain structure and mechanism of action are entirely different from the product system designed for static stockpile dust suppression — the two cannot be used interchangeably. This is also the fundamental reason ER can achieve long-lasting dust suppression on heavy-load haul roads.

Through this project, ER road dust-suppression technology has provided an efficient, environmentally friendly and long-lasting dust-control solution for the Zambia copper mine haul road, and a replicable practice reference for dust control on overseas mine roads.
